New feeding facilities prioritises learners' welfare

A new feeding facility for orphans and vulnerable children has been officially opened at Westside High School, offering hope and nutrition to learners in need. This initiative aims to fight food insecurity among disadvantaged learners and ensure they receive the nourishment necessary to focus on their education and thrive academically.The facility, supported by a N$200 000 donation from the Swakop Uranium Foundation, will provide daily meals to learners in need. This critical support complements the Namibian government’s existing feeding program, which supplies the food and highlights the government’s commitment to the health and educational success of vulnerable youth.Principal of Westside High School, Veneza Rheeder, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the donation, which not only funded the feeding facility but also helped refurbish the school gates. “This contribution has made a significant difference in the lives of our learners and enhanced the school’s infrastructure,” said Rheeder. “No child can succeed on an empty stomach, and this facility ensures that our most disadvantaged learners have a fair chance to learn and grow.”Percy McCallum, chairperson of the Swakop Uranium Foundation, praised the school’s efforts. He further encouraged learners to dedicate themselves to their studies. He highlighted the foundation’s long-term commitment to Namibia’s youth and pointed to potential career opportunities at Husab Mine as a source of motivation for learners.Representing the education ministry, Albert Bernado emphasised the importance of partnerships in sustaining the Feeding Program and called on other corporations to join forces with the government. “Together, we can ensure that no learner is left behind due to hunger,” Bernado remarked.Governor Neville Andre urged the school community to take pride in the new facility and maintain it for future generations. “This is more than just a building; it is a lifeline for many learners. Let us ensure it remains a source of support for years to come,” he said.
