Nedbank Namibia invests N$88 800 in the Mathematics Institute
In a strong show of commitment to education and youth empowerment, Nedbank Namibia has partnered with the Namibian Mathematics Institute (NMI) to strengthen mathematics learning in the country. The bank officially handed over N$88 800 to the institute during a ceremony held at the Nedbank Campus in Windhoek.
Speaking at the event, Nedbank Namibia’s Human Capital Executive, Bianca Muller, said the bank views education as a cornerstone of national development. "At Nedbank, we believe that education is not just a social responsibility; it is a strategic investment in the future of our country. In the world of banking, mathematics is not just useful − it is indispensable,” Muller said. “From calculating interest rates and managing portfolios to analysing data and forecasting trends, mathematics is the language we speak every day. It is the foundation of financial literacy and, by extension, financial inclusion.”
NMI was established to address the growing need for targeted support in mathematics education. The institute is known for its innovative Map Mathematics guide, which uses maps of Namibia and Africa to teach concepts such as distance, speed, ratios, vectors and trigonometry in a practical and relatable way.
Beyond teaching tools, NMI also hosts workshops for senior secondary school teachers (grades 10 and 11) to enhance classroom practices and build learners’ confidence in the subject. The institute’s broader goal is to create a space where learners and educators can engage with mathematics dynamically, helping to clarify the subject and inspire future mathematicians, scientists and innovators.
Nedbank’s contribution to NMI forms part of its larger investment in STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The bank also recently supported the Mobile Planetarium Initiative, which brings interactive astronomy and space science experiences to schools across Namibia, particularly in under-resourced areas.
Muller emphasised that these initiatives reflect Nedbank’s belief in equitable access to learning opportunities.
“Our support for the Mobile Planetarium and the Namibia Mathematics Institute reflects our belief that every child, regardless of their background, deserves the opportunity to explore, learn, and succeed,” she said.
Through this partnership, Nedbank Namibia continues to demonstrate its dedication to empowering the next generation with the skills and knowledge needed to shape the country’s future.
