Matthew aims to be a great athlete
Matthew won best junior athlete at the national athletics, and he is hungry for more.
Matthew Raubenheimer, who turns 13 in October, looks to be an athlete set for the future. Last year he took part but only got silver medals. After hard work and dedication, he came back stronger and made the most this year as he won two gold medals and best junior male, junior track and junior victor ludorum at the NSSU athletics.
Speaking about his achievements this year, he said: “Winning two medals at the national athletics and being chosen for the Khomas under-13 rugby team are the best highlights so far. We are playing national trials on the 25th and 26th of May for Craven Week and I am excited!”
Matthew attends school at Windhoek Gymnasium, with PE and art being his favourite subjects. Passionate in everything he does, when asked what he wants to be when he grows up, he said: “I want to be an Olympic champ or a professional rugby player and after retirement I want to be an architect. Being a professional athlete is something I want to give a go. What better occupation can you ask for, doing something you love every day.”
Having to play two different sports can be quite challenging but Matthew finds it fun and exciting having to juggle athletics and rugby. In his free time, he likes to train, play rugby and jump on the trampoline. He also enjoys going on adventurous holidays or going to the beach with his parents and his younger brother Jonathan, who is ten years old.
When asked what motivates him to do sports, Matthew said, “I love the challenge to compete and constantly improve myself to become the best version of myself.”
His favourite meal is spaghetti Bolognese and being a Marvel fan, his favourite movie is ‘Spiderman: No Way Home’.
Matthew’s dad, Donald Neilon, said, “My biggest dream for Matthew is to achieve his dreams and to always do his best.”
Matthew has set the bar high for himself and he intends to work hard and achieve everything. A lot to look forward to and be excited about.
