Lions crowned Super League champions
The Schoemans Group Windhoek Gymnasium Lions lifted their trophy after remaining undefeated in the Standard Bank Namibia Secondary School Rugby Super League.
The Standard Bank Namibia Secondary School Rugby (NSSR) Super League was nothing short of entertainment, concluding in high fashion with the Windhoek Gymnasium Lions crowned as the champions.
A tough tournament it was indeed, with seven teams competing, including Schoemans Group Windhoek Gymnasium, Samsung Windhoek High School (WHS), KMC One Construction Windhoek Afrikaans Private School (WAP), OK Foods Moria, PSG Walvis Bay Private High School (WBPHS), PSG Pro-Ed Academy and Dr Lemmer.
WHK Gym took on WBPHS in their first match, winning 31-24. They defeated every team that came across their path. After winning all their games in their league, they faced Moria in the semi-finals, defeating them convincingly by 50-8.
WAP, who won the Super League in 2018 and in 2019, also had a good campaign, winning all their games and only losing against one team, the Lions. In a thrilling semi-final game, WAP took on WHS. WAP won the game by one point, 21-20.
Blockbuster
WAP made it into the final and were looking to get their hands on a third trophy in a row, as they had to take on the Lions at the Lion’s Den, Windhoek Gymnasiums rugby field.
The game had fans on their feet as they watched a tight and entertaining match.
JW Visagie scored the first points on the scoresheet for the Lions by converting a penalty.
WAP responded with a try as winger Nico Tromp got his team in the lead. WAP fullback Andre Siepker wasn’t having the best of days, missing two conversions and three penalties.
Last gasp
WAP were leading the match 23-21 with only four minutes left on the clock before the final whistle. The Lions got a penalty and entrusted JW Visagie to convert it, which he did just before the referee blew his whistle. The game ended 24–23 in the Lions' favour.
After the game, Winslow Olivier, WAP captain, said: "I’m so proud of the boys. We gave it everything we had; we can hold our heads high because we played well."
Janeman Brand, the Lions' coach, said: "From the beginning, the game was tight. WAP dominated us from the beginning; they didn’t allow us to play the way we wanted to play. We showed character, and I think that was the most important thing that got us over the line."
WAP vice-captain, Theunis van Wyk, added: "A few of the boys are in tears, but I am happy with how we played. We couldn’t have asked for a better opponent, and the game was really intense."
