Go-karting continues to grow
Racers showed up in numbers at the Tony Rust Race Track to compete for top honours in karting.
The Standard Bank National Leg 4 Rotax Max Challenge kicked off on Saturday at the Tony Rust Race Track.
With 27 karts in action on Saturday, the races were definitely intense and racers brought their A-game to try and win.
The competition started with the Bambino category, which is for racers between the ages of five and nine. Nande Kaiyamo showed some skills as he took first place while Mandume Kaiyamo took second and Renel Coetzee took third place.
In the Junior Max category, Koos Reyneke put in a world-class performance as he took first place with Darius Kotze taking second.
In the DD2 category, Justus Beulker took first place with Ivan Vorster taking second.
The winner of the DD2 2021 motorsport national championship, Richie Slamet, could only manage third place as his car was giving him problems. Richie’s dad said, “The car had a technical issue. At this moment we are not sure what exactly happened.”
In the Micro Max category for the age group seven to eleven, Paul Oosthuizen made it look easy as he led from the start of race and grabbed first place, lapping more than three racers and establishing a gap all the way to the end.
John Kapolola, who was a spectator at the race track, said: “It’s so amazing to see all these kids race. We have a bright future in these young people because they can go and compete on international level if they stay committed.”
Jorg Goldbeck, the organiser of the event, said: “From a sporting point, I think it was really exciting; the races were excellent.”
