From zero to hero
The Bulldozer and Erongo’s debate revolution
In 2023, the Erongo Region debate team entered the national arena as underdogs. They left with zero wins – a result that could have discouraged even the most spirited students. But for Duinesig High School’s Paulus Sethie, that moment became the spark of a revolution.
Just two years later, Erongo celebrates a remarkable transformation, having secured second place at the 2025 Namport National School Debate Championships in Walvis Bay – along with a N$250 000 prize earmarked for educational development in the region.
Their rise is not just a story of trophies and accolades but also one of resilience and leadership, with Sethie – known as “The Bulldozer” – at its heart.
Those who have seen Sethie in action understand the nickname. His debating style is uncompromising, blending relentless logic, bold delivery, and the ability to dismantle opposing arguments with force and clarity. Behind the nickname, however, is a young man who embodies discipline, humility, and a deep commitment to learning.
In 2024, a year after the team’s rocky start, Sethie’s talent was officially recognised when he was crowned Best Debater in Erongo. His rise was not just about personal skill – it became a source of belief for his teammates. “He debates like a bulldozer,” one teammate said, “but he also lifts the rest of us to believe we can stand on that stage and win.”
A record of growth
2023: No wins at nationals, but the foundation laid.
2024: Fourth at the MVA Debate Nationals and third at the Namport Nationals.
2025: Second place at the Namport Nationals – a silver medal and a step closer to the national crown.
Each year, Erongo climbed higher, building a legacy of consistency. What began as a team dismissed as inexperienced is now recognised as one of Namibia’s most formidable debating regions.
More than a prize
The N$250 000 award goes beyond celebrating victory; it is dedicated to education and development in the region. Coaches and educators see it as an opportunity to expand training programmes, foster critical thinking, and nurture future leaders.
“This money is an investment in minds,” said one mentor. “What these learners have achieved shows that if you build young people’s capacity, the whole region moves forward.”
For Sethie, the journey from 2023 to 2025 has been personal. “We went from being written off to being respected,” he reflected. “The defeats built us. They taught us to prepare harder, think deeper, and believe that one day we would stand as equals with the best in the country. That day has come.”
Looking ahead
With their current trajectory, Erongo is no longer chasing recognition – they are now strong contenders for the national championship. At the centre of this march forward stands Sethie, The Bulldozer, who has grown from determined newcomer to symbol of transformation.
From zero wins to national glory, Erongo has bulldozed its way into history, and their story is only just beginning.
