Empowering excellence: JEDS Motivational Day
The University of Namibia (Unam) Jose Eduardo Dos Santos (JEDS) campus council hosted a motivational day exclusively tailored to grade nine to 12 learners from the four northern regions of Namibia.
The event, which sought to inspire and empower learners in their academic journey, took place on 16 March. Coordinated through the campus council's community engagement efforts under secretary for academic affairs Paavo Nghikevali, the initiative was a response to the high failure rates experienced in 2022 and 2023.
It featured guest speakers and interactive sessions where learners were equipped with insights, guidance and motivation to pursue their academic and personal aspirations. Additionally, the event aimed to generate interest in higher education within engineering disciplines offered by Unam's School of Engineering.
The Motivational Day saw 549 learners from 23 schools in the Oshikoto, Oshana, Omusati, and Ohangwena regions participating.
Dr Malakia Haimbangu, one of the speakers on the day and a senior education officer from Omusati, emphasised resilience, adding: "Your determination to succeed should always be stronger than any obstacle".
Professor Oluwagbenga Johnson, a mechanical and metallurgical engineering professor, highlighted the transformative impact of engineering, encouraging learners to stay curious, creative and consistent: "Engineering isn't just a career; it's a way to shape the world".
Meanwhile, Johanna Shinana, a fourth-year civil engineering student, spoke about the significance of setting goals and viewing challenges as stepping stones towards success.
The event also featured performances by the Northern Campus Choir and engineering student Maitah X.O, as well as activities by the YOU Network Society, adding a cultural dimension and fostering unity among participants.
Overall, the Motivational Day reflected the School of Engineering’s commitment to nurturing future leaders and innovators, serving as a source of inspiration and motivation for excellence. The energy and enthusiasm witnessed throughout the event left a positive impression on attendees.
