Real-world experience, mentorship and personal growth.

In a world where many young people struggle to bridge the gap between education and employment, Discover Gap Year has become a transformative force for Namibia’s youth.

Founded by Kevin Mwashuma in 2018 and officially launched in 2019, this faith-inspired non-governmental organisation (NGO) provides practical training, mentorship and spiritual guidance to help students transition confidently into the world of work.

At its core, Discover Gap Year offers structured internship opportunities for both high school graduates and university students. Through strong partnerships with NUST, UNAM, and several private laboratories and industries, students gain hands-on experience in real workplaces, particularly in science, chemistry and technology. Companies such as Trace Elements Analysis (TEA) Laboratories, the Namibia Uranium Institute, and Jojoba Desert Oils have hosted participants, equipping them with valuable technical and professional skills.

For Mwashuma, who is also a pastor, the programme’s vision extends beyond academics. “We help young people manage the transition from school to work through mentorship, soft skills training and spiritual growth.”

His unique blend of pastoral care and career mentorship nurtures both character and competence in participants.

The programme runs across several tiers. High school students explore career paths before committing to university, helping to reduce dropout rates, while university and graduate interns gain essential work experience through placements lasting from three months to a year.

Participants such as Naango Kainge, now a chemist at Africa Laboratory Specialists Namibia, credit the programme for launching their careers. Others, like Rauha Primus and Petrina Hamutenya, say their internships at TEA Laboratories gave them confidence, discipline and laboratory experience.

Furthermore, Discover Gap Year emphasises personal growth, resilience and purpose. Through mentorship and spiritual guidance, students learn to overcome challenges and embrace professional life with confidence.

With around 60% of participants moving into employment or higher education, Discover Gap Year bridges the gap between learning and living while shaping Namibia’s next generation of scientists, professionals and leaders.
