Here's what it means.What is an industrial design?It is the visual appearance of a product, not how it works. The shape of a bottle, the pattern on a textile, the layout of a banking app, all can qualify. Industrial design law protects how something looks; patents protect how it functions.What is the treaty?The Riyadh Design Law Treaty was adopted by the World Intellectual Property Organisation in Saudi Arabia in November 2024. It is WIPO's 28th treaty and only the second dealing specifically with industrial designs.It does not create new rights. It standardises the paperwork behind registering them — aiming to cut red tape, expand digital filing and make the process more predictable across member states.Why is Namibia considering it?Namibia has belonged to the Hague Agreement, an older international design registration system, since 2004. The Riyadh treaty would sit alongside it, not replace it.The Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy and the Business and Intellectual Property Authority say it could benefit local designers and small businesses through:Lower costs, by allowing multiple designs in one applicationWider access to digital filing systemsThe option to delay publishing a design's details, useful before a product launchWhat happens next?Government is consulting stakeholders — designers, manufacturers, SMEs — before deciding whether to ratify. A final decision would go to the National Assembly.
