Vintage treasures to go under the hammer at Namibia’s premier classic car auction

Annual Old Wheelers auction promises nostalgia, horsepower and bidding wars
Car lovers, collectors and nostalgic thrill-seekers, mark your calendars. This Saturday, the Old Wheelers Annual Vintage Car Auction returns with a lineup that promises to excite even the most seasoned petrol heads.
STAFF REPORTER
Hosted by Auction Dynamix in partnership with the Old Wheelers Club, the auction on Saturday kicks off at 10:00 at the club’s premises, with registrations starting from 08:00.

This year’s event showcases some of the rarest and most cherished vintage vehicles in Namibia and is set to be the biggest auction yet, with close to 80 cars expected to roll onto the floor. Be sure to watch tonight’s edition of My.na Cars, broadcast at 21:00 on DStv Channel 285 and GOtv Channel 26, for a glimpse of what’s on offer this weekend.

Historic gems

In a pre-auction interview, My.na Cars presenter Diana Master spoke to Luton Koorts, auctioneer and admin at Auction Dynamix, and Dederick Jankowitz, senior auctioneer, who highlighted some of the top attractions.

“This year, nearly all cars are in running condition,” said Koorts. “Of about 60 cars, maybe seven are project vehicles. The rest? Ready to drive the moment the auctioneer says, ‘Sold!’”

Among the stars of the show:

• Shelby Cobra Backdraft – A collector’s dream, still bank-financeable due to extensive certifications.

• 1968 V8 Ford Mustang – A pristine follow-up to last year’s 1969 model, ready to drive off the lot.

• Land Cruiser classics – Ever popular in Namibia, these workhorses are as rugged as they are reliable.

• 1936 DKW Auto Union ‘Woody Kombi’ – The oldest vehicle in the auction and possibly the most fascinating. Built largely out of wood and still in running condition, the Woody includes quirks such as a foot-start ignition.

Bidding wars

Last year saw a fierce 15-minute bidding battle for a Land Cruiser that finally sold for N$480 000.

“That was one of the most intense moments we’ve had,” Koorts recalled. With increased interest and growing attendance, similar battles are expected this year.

Entry is free for spectators, courtesy of sponsors Castle Light and Standard Bank. Those looking to bid must register and pay a refundable registration fee.

Beyond the cars, the event is about culture and connection. “We see grandfathers bringing grandchildren to show them cars they grew up with,” said Koorts. “It’s more than an auction – it’s a generational bridge.”

Do your homework

For those new to the world of vintage car auctions, Jankowitz offered some sound advice: “Do your homework. Visit during the week to inspect the vehicles. Know what you’re buying. Once the auction starts, keep your hand up if you want it and down if you don’t.”

All vehicles are listed by private owners, and while there are reserve and guide prices, bargains are still very much on the table.

“We’ve had people walk away with unbelievable deals, and we’ve seen cars return years later, completely restored and unrecognisable. That’s the magic of this community,” he said.

The Old Wheelers Club, founded in 1986, has grown into a thriving hub for classic car enthusiasts across Namibia. Its museum and events offer not only a glimpse into automotive history but also a welcoming community for enthusiasts of all ages.

Free for all

“You don’t have to own a classic car to join,” said Jankowitz. “You can be a voluntary member, or just visit to appreciate the beauty and stories these cars carry.”

And if you’re worried about finding parts for your vintage buy? Don’t be. The Old Wheelers community is tight-knit and always ready to help source and share resources.

Whether you’re looking to bid, browse, or simply enjoy a cold Castle Light while soaking in some automotive nostalgia, the Old Wheelers Auction is the place to be this Saturday.

There’s free entry for non-bidders, while bidders are required to pay a registration fee. Watch the full feature tonight on My.na Cars at 21:00 on DStv Channel 285 and GOtv Channel 26.
