THE BIG IDEA

Innovation needs more than ideas: Namibia’s Missing Middle
Namibia is not short of ideas. Across business, universities, government and communities, people are developing new products, services, technologies and ways of solving old problems. The word innovation is now firmly part of the national conversation.
Frank Steffen

But there is a less comfortable question: what happens between the idea and the market? That space is often where promising innovation gets stuck.

An entrepreneur may have a product, but not the industry connection to test it. A researcher may have valuable knowledge, but no pathway to commercialization. A startup may be investment-ready, but not yet connected to the right investor. An established company may want to innovate, but not know where to find the expertise or emerging solutions it needs.

This is the missing middle in an innovation ecosystem.

It is not necessarily a lack of entrepreneurs or ideas. It is the infrastructure that connects them to the resources, institutions, markets, expertise and capital required to move forward.

For smaller emerging markets such as Namibia, this matters particularly. We cannot build every capability inside every institution. Nor should we try. The opportunity lies in creating an architecture in which existing capabilities can connect and work together.

That means thinking about innovation less as a collection of individual programs and more as an ecosystem.

Business Financial Solutions (BFS), for example, brings investment and financial capability into this ecosystem. The International University of Management (IUM) contributes research, knowledge and the potential for commercialization. Scale Up Namibia connects businesses and innovators into broader growth and enterprise-support structures. Each addresses a different part of the journey.

The value is created not only by what each organization does independently, but by what becomes possible between them.

The Namibia Innovation !Hub is a Section 21 working in that space, helping create platforms, relationships and pathways that allow those connections to happen.

A practical example came through from the recent Oil and Gas conference, where the !Hub provided innovators with a platform to exhibit at the conference. The opportunity was more than exhibition space: it opened a door into an industry environment that some of those innovators might otherwise have struggled to access. This is what innovation infrastructure looks like in practice.

It is a new laboratory, a technology park or a funding program but sometimes it is also the connection that was missing, it is creating a platform to elevate.

For Namibia, building an innovation economy may therefore require us to ask a different question:

Not simply: Who are our innovators?

But: What needs to exist around them for their ideas to move?

Because innovation does not scale in isolation. It scales through an ecosystem and it can only scale as big as its ecosystem.

This is the first of a monthly conversation in this space. Every month, the Namibia Innovation !Hub will spotlight the thriving Namibian Innovation Ecosystem, showcasing the connections, talent, opportunities and breakthroughs to be found, everywhere.
