The severe weather in South Africa comes as Namibia experiences its own winter chill, with frigid temperatures being felt across several parts of the country. The cold is particularly noticeable in the early mornings and evenings, while residents in southern, central and high-lying areas can experience significantly colder conditions.For Namibians travelling to or through South Africa, the winter weather is an important consideration, particularly for those using major routes into the country. Travellers are advised to check weather forecasts and road conditions before departure, as snowfall, ice and freezing temperatures can cause sudden disruptions on mountain passes and other vulnerable routes.According to the South African Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), severe winter weather is disrupting travel across several parts of South Africa, with heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures, rain and strong winds forcing road closures and creating hazardous conditions for motorists.The South African government has urged the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary travel to areas affected by the adverse weather, warning that conditions can change rapidly.The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an Orange Level 6 warning for disruptive snow, with parts of the Eastern Cape and Free State among the worst affected. Several major roads and mountain passes have been affected by snow and icy conditions.Despite the reopening of some routes, motorists have been warned to remain extremely cautious. In KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State, authorities are closely monitoring the N3 and other key routes, particularly around Van Reenen and Oliviershoek passes.The GCIS said the N3 between Harrismith and Van Reenen Pass remains hazardous, with snow, sleet, rain and ice affecting travelling conditions. Emergency teams are spraying brine across all lanes to prevent black ice from forming.Parts of Mpumalanga and the Western Cape are also experiencing adverse winter weather, including snowfall, icy roads and strong winds. A Yellow Level 2 warning for disruptive winds has been issued for parts of the Northern Cape and Western Cape, where strong winds could reduce visibility and disrupt transport.The National Disaster Management Centre, provincial and local disaster management structures, traffic authorities and emergency services are continuing to monitor conditions and coordinate responses, the GCIS said.Road closures are implemented to protect lives, and motorists should never attempt to bypass barriers or enter roads declared unsafe. Routes that are currently open could be closed if conditions deteriorate, while previously closed roads may reopen once they have been inspected and cleared.Motorists planning long-distance journeys are advised to check the latest weather and road information through verified sources before departure. Where possible, travel should be postponed until conditions improve.Authorities have also urged the public to protect children, older people and other vulnerable individuals from the extreme cold. Farmers and livestock owners are encouraged to ensure animals have access to warm, adequately sheltered areas.
