MTC puts N$624.9m into networks

MTC says it will invest N$624.9 million in telecommunications infrastructure during the 2025/26 financial year as it expands network coverage, fibre connectivity and 5G services.The investment was highlighted at the opening of the 25th Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair (OATF) on Sunday, where MTC also renewed its focus on digital inclusion and enterprise development.MTC chief technical and information officer Dr Monica Nehemia said the capital expenditure programme would support the expansion of network coverage, the rollout of fibre connectivity, upgrades to existing infrastructure and the accelerated deployment of 5G technology.The telecommunications company has also allocated at least N$1.2 million annually to trade fairs and exhibitions across Namibia, according to Nehemia.MTC has supported the OATF for more than 20 years. Nehemia said trade fairs remained important platforms for bringing together businesses, entrepreneurs, customers, investors and communities.She said the company's support for such events formed part of its broader contribution to entrepreneurship and economic activity.The OATF, now in its 25th year, has grown into one of northern Namibia's major commercial and exhibition platforms, providing businesses and entrepreneurs with an opportunity to showcase products and services.Nehemia said digital connectivity was increasingly important for economic participation, particularly as businesses adopt technology and seek access to new markets and opportunities.She also called on companies to place greater emphasis on environmental, social and governance principles and corporate social investment, arguing that businesses should measure their contribution beyond financial performance."True business success must be measured not only by balance sheets, profits and market share, but also by the communities uplifted [and] the young people empowered," Nehemia said.The investment plans come as Namibia continues to expand its digital infrastructure, with telecommunications companies under pressure to extend coverage and improve connectivity while supporting the country's wider digital transformation agenda.
