More presence, more power and more torque

Mitsubishi Motors South Africa has updated its Triton bakkie range for 2026 with the exciting new Triton Bi-Turbo and stylish Triton GLS, ensuring that the Triton line-up continues to meet the needs and expectations of South African bakkie customers.

The evolution of the next-generation Mitsubishi Triton continues with the addition of the all-new Triton Bi-Turbo. This model, specially developed for the South African market, is ready to write a new chapter in the Triton legacy.

In addition to enhanced power and torque, the Triton Bi-Turbo offers sportier styling and improved safety through the inclusion of the Mitsubishi Safety Sensing suite.

"The new additions to the Triton range have been introduced while retaining the product's value-for-money proposition, with extremely competitive pricing considering the additional features and technology included as standard," explains Nonyane.

A sportier exterior

The Mitsubishi Triton Bi-Turbo elevates the Triton's robust design with a variety of sporty elements, culminating in an imposing appearance that reflects the toughness expected of a bakkie.

The Dynamic Shield design concept forms the foundation of the front-end styling and is enhanced by a bold design incorporating a robust three-dimensional front grille, fenders and lower protector. The daytime running lights comprise three L-shaped LED elements which, together with the three-light lower headlamps, ensure a distinctive road presence.

Large, solid surfaces along the sides accentuate the powerful profile before flowing into T-shaped tail-lights that emphasise the width of the rear.

Additional standard equipment fitted to the Triton Bi-Turbo includes roof rails, a styling bar, heated door mirrors and an assisted tailgate, improving access to the load bin.

More power and torque

The biggest update is under the bonnet, where the 2.4-litre 4N16 DI-DC Bi-Turbo diesel engine and its two-stage turbocharger have been fine-tuned to unlock additional power and torque. The result is 150kW at 3,500rpm and 470Nm between 1,500 and 2,750rpm, delivering noticeably stronger performance while retaining the drivability for which the Triton is renowned.

The Bi-Turbo set-up comprises a smaller turbine that provides immediate low-speed response, effectively reducing turbo lag, while a second, larger turbine sustains high-end boost. The Triton Bi-Turbo offers enhanced acceleration as well as improved power and torque across the entire rev range.

Power is transferred to the wheels through a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission. The Triton Bi-Turbo will be available exclusively with Mitsubishi's renowned Super Select II four-wheel-drive system, incorporating a rear differential lock. This system has become one of the defining features of the Triton's off-road capability. Seven selectable drive modes allow the driver to tailor the Super Select II system and power delivery to suit both driving conditions and personal preference.

One of the key advantages of Super Select II is its ability to adapt seamlessly to changing conditions. Unlike conventional part-time four-wheel-drive systems, Super Select II allows the driver to select 4H while on the move at speeds of up to 100km/h, providing added confidence when road surfaces become wet, slippery or unpredictable. In heavy rain, on wet tar, gravel or other low-grip surfaces, 4H distributes drive between the front and rear wheels, helping to improve traction, stability and driver confidence.

These features make the Triton Bi-Turbo particularly well suited to South African driving conditions, where an everyday journey can quickly become a wet-weather, gravel-road or long-distance towing challenge. Under the skin, a variety of suspension and handling improvements ensure that the Triton remains as well-balanced as ever while effectively transferring the additional power and torque to the wheels. Electric power steering provides more precise steering response.

As has always been the case with the Triton, this latest Bi-Turbo derivative is equally suited to work and leisure, boasting a towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes and a payload rating of 1,000kg.

Technology and connectivity

Inside, the Triton Bi-Turbo raises the bar with premium finishes and additional equipment that make every journey, whether long or short, more enjoyable for both the driver and passengers.

A leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear lever, together with synthetic leather seats featuring suede-knit inserts and quilting, provide a more premium feel throughout the cabin. Carpet flooring adds another touch of refinement underfoot. Dual-zone climate control ensures occupant comfort, while driver and passenger vanity mirrors with lids, together with an upper glovebox, further enhance the practicality of the interior. An auto-dimming rear-view mirror improves visibility during night-time driving.

The infotainment offering has also been significantly enhanced with the addition of a nine-inch Smartphone-Link Display Audio touchscreen, a seven-inch digital driver's display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a six-speaker audio system.

Safety enhancements

The Triton Bi-Turbo has received a significant safety upgrade through the inclusion of the Mitsubishi Motors Safety Sensing suite, comprising an extensive range of advanced driver assistance systems.

These include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with steering wheel controls, Automatic High Beam (AHB), Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) with pedestrian detection, Lane Change Assist (LCA), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Blind Spot Warning (BSW), and front and rear parking sensors. The Triton Bi-Turbo also benefits from the addition of Mitsubishi's Multi Around Monitor system.

GLS models go dark

As part of the 2026 Triton range update, Mitsubishi Motors South Africa has also refined the Triton GLS models with a darker exterior appearance.

The fog lamp bezels, door handles, side steps, tailgate handle and garnish are now finished in matte black. The front bumper garnish, rear bumper, door mirrors and 18-inch alloy wheels feature a metallic black finish, while the inner housings of the rear combination lamps have also been blacked out. These updates give the GLS models a more assertive appearance without any change in pricing.
