Meatco abattoir maintains premium export status

Meatco's Windhoek abattoir has reinforced its position as the backbone of Namibia's premium beef export industry, maintaining world-class food safety standards while investing in operational improvements despite ongoing pressure from reduced national cattle supplies.Meatco's integrated annual report 2025/26 states that abattoir operations remain central to the company's agro-processing and value-addition strategy, transforming Namibian livestock into premium export-quality beef products that meet stringent international food safety and quality requirements.The division oversees the full production chain, including slaughtering, deboning, packaging, hygiene management, engineering support and production planning.One of the operation's most significant achievements during the financial year was retaining its British Retail Consortium Global Standards (BRC) Global Food Safety Grade A Certification for a second consecutive year.The company also maintained microbiological results consistently within international export compliance standards, while staff hygiene compliance exceeded 98% throughout the reporting period.Meatco said operational efficiency also received a boost through the commissioning of new packaging equipment, improving productivity within the deboning section and supporting more streamlined processing.Protecting qualityIt said that major preventative maintenance programmes were completed on critical processing infrastructure to improve equipment reliability and reduce the risk of production disruptions.At the same time, Meatco expanded employee wellness initiatives and strengthened start-up procedures together with pre-operational inspection systems to further enhance production consistency and food safety compliance.The company said these initiatives collectively reinforced its commitment to product quality, operational reliability and maintaining access to premium export markets.It said although Namibia continued to experience lower national cattle availability during the reporting period, the Windhoek abattoir maintained stable operations and continued supplying high-quality beef products to both domestic and international customers.An increase in average carcass weight reflected the company's continued focus on product optimisation and value recovery, while disciplined production planning ensured operational efficiency despite supply constraints.Meatco said that continuous hygiene monitoring, rigorous quality assurance programmes and ongoing employee training enabled the abattoir to remain fully compliant with international export requirements while strengthening customer confidence in the Meatco brand.Preventative maintenance and continuous process optimisation further improved equipment reliability, production continuity and overall operational efficiency.Maximising valueBeyond production performance, the operations continued to make an important contribution to producer value creation and the group's financial sustainability.According to the report, higher average producer prices demonstrated Meatco's commitment to maximising returns for livestock farmers through efficient processing and effective market realisation.Operational efficiencies were further supported through disciplined cost management, preventative maintenance programmes and improvements to packaging processes.The report highlights that Meatco continues investing in initiatives aimed at strengthening long-term competitiveness.These include further modernisation of packaging systems; preventative maintenance of production infrastructure; ongoing enhancement of hygiene and quality assurance systems; continuous optimisation of operational processes as well as sustained employee development and wellness programmes.The company said it believes these investments reinforce its position as a trusted supplier of premium Namibian beef to international markets.Looking ahead, Meatco said it expects the Windhoek abattoir to play an even greater role as national livestock numbers gradually recover.The focus for the coming financial year will be on improving processing efficiency, maintaining internationally recognised food safety certification, enhancing productivity and maximising value creation for livestock producers.
