Namibia's long-delayed Kudu gas project faces another lengthy wait, with operator BW Energy expecting to complete the process of bringing in new investors only in the second half of 2027.The Norwegian-listed energy company is negotiating with approximately 50 prospective investors as it seeks to reduce its 95% participating interest in the offshore development and bring additional partners into the project.In its third-quarter 2026 investor presentation, released on 29 October, BW Energy said it had signed approximately 20 confidentiality agreements with potential investors as part of the farm-down process.The timetable includes securing the necessary Namibian government approvals, meaning the transaction could take several more months to conclude.The latest disclosure highlights the commercial hurdles still facing a project discovered more than five decades ago but which has yet to produce its first gas.BW Energy has not disclosed how much of its interest it intends to sell, the amount of capital it hopes to raise or whether it has received binding investment offers.The National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (NAMCOR) holds the remaining 5% interest and has a conditional right to acquire an additional 5% upon first gas production.Investment before appraisalThe farm-down is central to the next phase of Kudu's development.BW Energy previously indicated that further appraisal activities were on hold pending the introduction of additional investment partners.This means the company is seeking to secure financial backing before advancing the next stage of technical evaluation and development planning.Although discussions with approximately 50 companies indicate a sizeable investor outreach, the signing of confidentiality agreements does not constitute investment commitments.A farm-down allows an existing licence holder to transfer part of its participating interest to another company, typically in exchange for funding or commitments towards future development costs.The scale of the investment required to develop Kudu, however, remains unclear.BW Energy has not provided an updated capital expenditure estimate or indicated how development costs would be distributed among prospective partners.Gas-to-power ambitionDiscovered in 1974, the Kudu field lies approximately 130km off Namibia's south-western coast, in water depths averaging 170 metres.BW Energy estimates that the project contains about 190 million barrels of oil equivalent in 2C contingent resources, alongside approximately 1.5 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas.The proposed development has historically centred on supplying offshore gas to a power station in Namibia, potentially reducing the country's reliance on imported electricity.BW Energy has considered converting a semi-submersible drilling rig into a floating production unit to reduce the capital expenditure associated with developing the field.However, the project still requires substantial offshore infrastructure, gas processing facilities and arrangements for transporting the gas to shore.No final investment decision has been announced, and there is no confirmed construction or first-gas timetable.The company has also discussed the possibility of positioning Kudu as a future natural gas and power hub serving the wider Orange Basin and regional energy markets.Such an ambition would require additional commercial agreements, infrastructure investment and sufficient demand to support the development.Oil potential broadens investment caseBW Energy is also highlighting the wider hydrocarbon potential of the Kudu area as it approaches prospective investors.The company said findings from the Kharas-1A exploration well had been incorporated into its geological assessment, identifying three petroleum plays with oil and gas potential.According to BW Energy, the well confirmed multiple petroleum source rocks, light oil and liquids.The findings broaden the project's investment proposition beyond its established gas resources, although the company has not announced a new recoverable oil resource estimate or a commercial development plan for the liquids potential.Further exploration and technical assessment would be required to establish their commercial significance.Government discussions continueBW Energy said discussions with the Namibian government over the proposed gas-to-power development remained active.However, its latest investor presentation did not indicate that outstanding commercial arrangements had been concluded.Government approvals will also be required to complete any transfer of participating interests arising from the farm-down.The second-half 2027 target therefore represents a milestone for securing new investors, rather than a production deadline.For Namibia, the distinction is important. While the country has increasingly attracted international attention following oil discoveries in the Orange Basin, converting its long-discovered gas resources into commercially viable energy infrastructure remains a separate challenge.Until BW Energy secures additional partners, concludes the necessary agreements and makes a final investment decision, Kudu's contribution to Namibia's electricity supply will remain an ambition rather than a near-term prospect.
