Keep the bike wheels turning for rhino conservation

Wilderness Namibia and Children in the Wilderness (CITW) have partnered with Pupkewitz Toyota in Windhoek to launch their "Save a Rhino" campaign, featuring a cycle race designed to raise awareness and galvanise collective action to protect Namibia’s iconic desert-adapted black rhino population.According to Wilderness, the 2 km circuit, which counts as one lap, will start and end at the Pupkewitz Toyota showroom on the corner of Independence Avenue and Harold Pupkewitz Street.The event runs from 20:00 on Friday, 7 November, to 08:00 on Saturday, 8 November, during which participants and teams can complete as many laps as they wish in support of rhino conservation.“All the funds raised will be shared equally between the Wilderness Community Rhino Rangers programme, based at Wilderness Desert Rhino Camp, and CITW partner schools to drive conservation education,” said Agnes Kerii, Wilderness Namibia Impact Manager.“We are delighted to partner with Pupkewitz Toyota on this innovative challenge and encourage our colleagues, friends and partners to take part. Collectively, we can all play a role not only in raising awareness but also in generating the funds needed to continue supporting sustainable development, empowering rural communities, and celebrating our frontline conservation heroes,” she added.As custodians of one of the world’s most endangered species, the Wilderness Community Rhino Rangers programme is at the forefront of rhino conservation in north-western Namibia.The Save a Rhino challenge seeks to highlight the ongoing need to protect this imperilled species while inspiring local communities, businesses, and individuals to contribute by taking part in the inaugural event.According to Wilderness, the cycle event will also feature a beer tent, coffee bar and food vendors. While there will be no official race winners, all participants will be recognised, with lucky draws adding to the excitement. Entry fees are N$200 for solo riders, N$800 for social teams of four, and N$5 000 for corporate teams of four. Children under 15 may participate free of charge. Entrants can collect their numbers from the dealership on Thursday, 6 November, from 16:00 to 18:30.Wilderness further stated that, as safety and operational management are a priority, Nampol will assist with patrols, marshals will be positioned at key points along the route and full logistical support will be provided.
