Global rhino recovery remains fragile

Three of the world’s five rhino species remain critically endangered despite significant population gains over the past 25 years, according to the International Rhino Foundation’s 2026 State of the Rhino report.Rhino populations have made important gains over the past quarter-century, but progress remains fragile, with fewer than 27 000 animals surviving in the wild.The International Rhino Foundation (IRF) released its 2026 State of the Rhino report ahead of World Rhino Day on 22 September, highlighting both major conservation successes and the urgent threats facing all five rhino species.According to the latest estimates from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), three of the five species are critically endangered. The Javan and Sumatran rhinos, both found only in Indonesia, face particularly severe threats, with their populations numbering in the dozens.“Over the past 25 years, white, black and greater one-horned rhino populations have made remarkable gains through diligent protection and key conservation measures,” said IRF executive director Nina Fascione.“Sadly, the two species remaining solely in Indonesia – Javan and Sumatran – are in serious jeopardy. We are proving that recovery is possible and must continue to apply these hard-won lessons to support the long-term survival of all five species.”Significant increaseThe report shows that greater one-horned rhino numbers have increased significantly since 2001, while black rhino populations have more than doubled. White rhino numbers have also increased over the longer term, although severe poaching pressure in recent years has led to a decline.White rhino numbers fell from 17 464 in the 2023 count to 15 752 in 2024, with most of the losses occurring in South Africa as a result of poaching.By contrast, black rhino numbers rose from 6 195 in 2022 to 6 788 at the end of 2024, while greater one-horned rhino numbers increased from an estimated 4 014 to 4 075 over the same period.The situation is considerably more precarious for Asia’s two remaining rhino species. Javan rhino numbers remain below 100 following a devastating decline in Indonesia between 2019 and 2023, when an estimated 18 to 26 animals were poached.Dramatic declineThe Sumatran rhino has suffered an even more dramatic long-term decline. Once estimated at nearly 300 animals around the turn of the millennium, the population is now estimated at only 34 to 47 individuals, all in Indonesia.The report also points to encouraging developments in the fight against poaching. Several Asian range states have recorded historic years with zero known rhino poaching, while legal accountability for poaching crimes has increased in South Africa and other African countries.In countries where updated figures were publicly available, rhino poaching declined overall in 2025. However, the IRF warned that continued security efforts remain essential as rhinos expand back into areas they historically occupied.“Thanks to the work of dedicated individuals around the globe – government agencies, rangers, reserve managers, conservationists, donors and others – three species of rhino are making slow but steady gains,” Fascione said.“Our work isn’t finished.”The IRF said the future of rhino conservation will depend not only on protecting animals from poaching, but also on maintaining safe, ecologically sustainable habitats capable of supporting growing populations.
