Free access to cultural heritage

Accessibility is central to the mandate of the National Art Gallery of Namibia (NAGN) and its umbrella organisation, the Museums Association of Namibia. Unlike many galleries around the world that charge admission fees, the NAGN offers free entry and is open to the public on weekdays and Saturdays. As a state-owned institution, the gallery regards free admission as a civic responsibility, ensuring that children, students and adults can engage with, learn from and celebrate Namibia’s shared history and artistic heritage. The gallery has three exhibition spaces, each with a distinct role in showcasing the country’s artistic development, from pioneering works to contemporary experimentation. The Lower Gallery: Honouring pioneers and new voicesTraditionally home to the NAGN’s permanent collection, the Lower Gallery has also hosted works by recipients of the Bank Windhoek Triennial Competition. The Lifetime Achievement Awards recognised three veteran artists whose work helped lay the technical and educational foundations of modern Namibian art. Among the exhibits are early stone sculptures, including a work created by award recipient Perna during her student years in 1963.The gallery also explores digital art through a dedicated darkened room showcasing the work of Lloyde, who won the Emerging Artist Prize, awarded to artists under 35, as well as second prize overall. Her short video work documents her personal experience of living with disabilities in Namibia, offering visitors an intimate perspective on the challenges and realities of everyday life. The Main Gallery: Art reflecting historyNamibian art provides a window into the country’s social and political development, reflecting changing experiences and perspectives across different historical periods. Before independence, artists such as master printmaker John Muafangejo used their work to highlight the realities of life under colonial rule, raise international awareness of Namibia and rally support for the liberation struggle. After independence, art developed into a more accessible and democratic medium through which artists could explore personal identity, nationhood, gender-based violence, historical genocides and cultural reclamation. These works demonstrate how art can preserve collective memory while encouraging dialogue about Namibia’s past and present. The Upper Gallery: Exploring new boundariesThe intimate Upper Gallery brings together works that speak to one another through shared themes, including labour, femininity and history.Although traditionally used to exhibit smaller works, the curatorial team is also experimenting with large-scale installations, challenging conventional ideas about how art can be displayed and experienced.Emerging artists can apply to exhibit alongside fellow creatives through group exhibition proposals. Successful applicants take part in an intensive collaborative mentorship programme lasting between 12 and 18 months, working with NAGN curators to develop a complete body of work. The gallery’s Emerging Artists Programme offers another pathway for young creatives. Its inaugural cohort, featuring artists Nea Zulu and Jodine Strauss, is participating in an 18-month fellowship that provides studio space, art materials, curatorial guidance and the opportunity to present a final exhibition.Taking art beyond WindhoekLooking ahead, the NAGN plans to extend its reach beyond the capital, connecting artistic communities in northern, southern and central Namibia.Planned regional activities include workshops, outreach initiatives and pop-up exhibitions designed to support grassroots artists in their home communities and help them develop their work before entering the national or international art scene.By combining the preservation of artistic heritage with opportunities for contemporary expression and regional outreach, the National Art Gallery of Namibia continues to provide a space where the country’s history is not only documented but also experienced, interpreted and brought to life through art.
