Commercial vehicle sales jump 23% in June

The commercial vehicle market demonstrated robust performance in June, with 677 new units sold representing a substantial 23.1% month-on-month increase and a solid 13.4% year-on-year gain, according to IJG Securities, underlining the sector's continued recovery trajectory.Light commercial vehicles dominated the market, accounting for 617 of the total sales, whilst medium commercial vehicles contributed 24 units and heavy or extra heavy commercial vehicles made up 36 units. The strong monthly performance was primarily driven by improvements in the light commercial segment, which more than offset declines in the heavier vehicle categories.The year-to-date figures paint an equally encouraging picture, with cumulative sales reaching 3,603 units, marking a 13.4% increase compared to the same period last year, IJG reported. On a twelve-month rolling basis, the market has expanded by 5.1% to 7,095 units, extending the steady growth pattern that has been evident since September 2024.However, the monthly performance revealed some divergence across segments. Whilst light commercial vehicle sales strengthened, medium commercial vehicles experienced a 7.7% month-on-month decline, and the heavy commercial vehicle segment saw a more pronounced 33.3% monthly drop. IJG noted that the sharp decline in heavy commercial vehicles, whilst appearing dramatic in percentage terms, represented just 18 fewer units and was largely attributed to a low comparative base.The annual comparison offers a more nuanced view of market dynamics. Light commercial vehicles posted impressive 21.0% year-on-year growth, with medium commercial vehicles following closely at 14.3%. In contrast, heavy commercial vehicle sales contracted by 45.5% annually, reflecting ongoing challenges in this segment.Despite these mixed signals in the monthly data, all segments recorded positive year-to-date performance, suggesting underlying market resilience, according to IJG. Over the twelve-month cumulative period, light commercial vehicles grew by 4.5%, whilst medium commercial vehicles surged by an impressive 41.3%. Heavy commercial vehicle sales showed only a marginal 1.8% decline over the same extended timeframe.The sustained growth since September 2024 indicates that the commercial vehicle market has successfully navigated previous headwinds and established a foundation for continued expansion, with particular strength in the light and medium segments that serve diverse business needs across the economy.
