BoN visits Meatco to strengthen livestock sector insights

The Bank of Namibia (BoN) visited the Meat Corporation of Namibia (Meatco) as part of its annual stakeholder engagement programme aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of the livestock industry's performance and its contribution to the national economy.A delegation from the central bank's Research and Financial Sector Development Department, together with officials from its Strategic Communications and International Relations Department, toured Meatco's slaughter and meat-processing facilities on Tuesday.The visit formed part of the bank's annual engagements with key sectors of the economy to improve its understanding of industry performance, emerging trends and the broader economic environment.During the visit, the delegation received an overview of Meatco's livestock procurement and cattle marketing systems, slaughter operations and value-adding activities across the meat-processing value chain.Discussions also focused on current slaughter trends and production patterns, which provide important indicators of the state of Namibia's national cattle herd, developments in the livestock sector and the industry's outlook for the coming financial period.According to the BoN, information gathered during such engagements contributes to its assessment of sectoral performance and the role of agriculture and agro-processing in the economy. The findings also support economic research, statistical reporting and evidence-based policy formulation.Meatco interim chief executive officer Ambassador Albertus Aochamub said the corporation welcomed the Bank's continued engagement with productive sectors of the economy.“Sound economic policy is strengthened by a thorough understanding of industries that create value, generate export earnings and sustain livelihoods,” he said.“The livestock and meat industry remains a strategic pillar of Namibia's economy, and we are pleased to contribute insights that support informed economic analysis and evidence-based policymaking.”
