These attacks often come in the form of fake prize notifications, fraudulent bank calls, or SMS scams urging victims to click suspicious links or share private details.“Cybercriminals are becoming more sophisticated, and they’re increasingly targeting people through realistic-sounding phone calls and messages,” said Tanya Hopker, cybersecuritywareness Specialist at Meinert Cyber Security. “We have seen cases where individuals were tricked into sharing full bank card details, thinking they were receiving a new card or claiming a cash prize.”With mobile banking and online communication becoming more common across Namibia, all citizens — regardless of location or digital experience — are potential targets. And during holidays, when people are more relaxed and often away from their usual support networks, the risk increases.Hopker emphasised that simple precautions can go a long way in preventing scams. “Do not share banking information over the phone. Don’t click on suspicious links. And always verify unusual requests through official channels.”Cybersecurity is not just a workplace issue — it’s a personal one. By staying alert and encouraging conversations with family members about digital safety, Namibians can help protect themselves and others.Remember: Your bank will never ask for your full card number or PIN. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Think twice before clicking or replying — especially during holidays.
