575 animals boost Namibia's conservation

Namibia has taken another step in strengthening its conservation efforts with the successful translocation of 575 wild animals from Etosha National Park to conservation areas across the country, including communal conservancies in the Kunene Region.Led by the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, the large-scale operation aims to restore wildlife populations, improve ecological balance and support Namibia's community-based conservation programme.The initiative is also expected to strengthen nature-based tourism and create long-term benefits for rural communities that depend on wildlife and conservation for their livelihoods.The translocation was made possible through a partnership between government, local communities, conservation organisations and private-sector partners.The Conservation Travel Foundation (CTF), the conservation arm of ultimate.earth (formerly Ultimate Safaris), secured about N$2.7 million in funding from the Lion Recovery Fund towards the project, which had a total value of approximately N$6.7 million.According to ultimate.earth, the animals have been released into conservation landscapes where they are expected to help rebuild wildlife populations and restore ecosystems that have experienced declines over time.The organisation said the project reflects Namibia's collaborative approach to conservation, with government providing policy leadership, communities acting as custodians of the land, and conservation organisations and private partners contributing funding, technical expertise and logistical support."The bolstering of wildlife populations in these landscapes is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when we work together towards a shared conservation vision," said Conservation Travel Foundation founder Tristan Cowley."Namibia's conservation success has always been built on partnership. Government has created the framework that allows conservation to thrive, communities remain the custodians of these landscapes, and organisations such as CTF and the Lion Recovery Fund can help mobilise additional support to strengthen these efforts."The Kunene Region, one of the project's main destinations, is internationally recognised for its desert-adapted wildlife, including free-ranging black rhinos, desert-adapted elephants and lions.Conservationists say rebuilding prey populations is essential to maintaining healthy predator numbers and reducing human-wildlife conflict. A stronger prey base enables predators to rely more on natural prey, reducing pressure on livestock and improving coexistence between wildlife and farming communities.Beyond the ecological benefits, the translocation is expected to strengthen Namibia's communal conservancy programme by increasing wildlife numbers that support tourism, create employment opportunities and generate income for rural communities.The initiative also aims to create larger, better-connected conservation landscapes, allowing wildlife to move more freely, improving genetic diversity, and increasing the resilience of animal populations to climate change and other environmental pressures.Cowley said addressing Namibia's conservation challenges requires cooperation across sectors."When government, communities, conservation organisations and responsible private-sector partners combine their efforts, we can achieve outcomes that would not be possible individually," he said.The Conservation Travel Foundation said its contribution forms part of its ongoing commitment to supporting practical conservation projects that protect biodiversity, strengthen community conservation and promote sustainable coexistence between people and wildlife.The translocation further reinforces Namibia's reputation for community-based conservation, where wildlife protection, rural development and sustainable tourism are closely linked.
