Proving that racing can be safe if done correctly
NMFS chairman Bradley Ferreira has years of experience behind the wheel.
Chairman of Namibian Motor Sport Federation (NMSF) Bradley Ferreira has had a love for cars since he was 12 years old. “I used to work on cars with my dad and he taught me everything I know about cars. This triggered my passion for cars and motorsports and today, almost 20 years later, I am involved in motorsports in one way or another,” he says.
Born in Rehoboth and being the youngest of four siblings, Ferreira never felt there was anything missing as he always had family around him and with him. Growing up in a small town where everyone knew each other was one of the beginning stages of his life which he got familiar with. His grandfather was an influential man who's role of establishing a church in the town was easily done. Both his parents were active teachers and he always needed to watch what he did and how he did it. Ultimately, his family was very well respected, his behavior needed to be in right standing with theirs and he has always tried to be very respectful and to continue their legacy.
Battles
Growing up Bradley didn’t have many life battles, but when he eventually had to deal with his battles at a later stage in life, he found himself destitute and arrogant. Being a very proud person, he felt it was better to deal with his problems himself. “Sometimes it is better dealing with issues on your own. It’s not always good confiding in too many people because their opinions might not always be what you need. What you need is a support structure, not an advisor.”
He takes his biggest inspiration from his father and his son. “I always wanted to achieve what my father has achieved and to continue what he has started. Later in my life, my son became my biggest inspiration to fight and to do everything I can for him.”
Back in the day the illegal street racing scene was huge and Bradley said he was part of it. “Back then cars were not as fast as they are today, but the risks were always there. In the late ‘90s drag racing at Tony Rust racetrack was already going on. It dawned on me that it is so much safer to drag race in a controlled environment rather than on the street.
“A group of my friends and I endeavoured to register a motor club with the NMSF to practise motorsport safely. It comes with the territory; once you are there it also depends on your determination. Making roads safe is now my number one priority by promoting motorsport in secure settings and with all rules and registration in place.”
In his time as a member of the executive of the NMSF, he wants to play his part in growing motorsports to higher heights and to develop talents from a young age. It is a huge fraternity with 10 different codes all over Namibia and he says he is honoured to work with this team.
He generally enjoys driving. “To me, time on the road is the best to regain some perspective and clear your head,” he says.
His family is quite musical. Whenever they get together, they sing and make music. He is a social person, but likes to spend time with a small circle of friends.
