I would like to share a matter of concern that affects our athletes in Namibia. It cannot be fair that upcoming athletes are being restricted or banned from the only track facility in the capital. It was brought to our attention that preference will be given to soccer (training and games). Also, athletic clubs should pay a monthly fee of approximately N$1 000, but still, no guarantee is given that you will have excess to the only national facility. It all depends on soccer game bookings, and it was made clear that soccer would get preference. If this decision does come from the ministry, did they consider the athletes that are working on becoming elite athletes? Shouldn't they take into consideration that athletics is the sport code in Namibia that generated Olympian athletes? This has motivated the youth to work hard to follow in the footsteps of our national athletic celebrities. It’s a pity the govern officials have to limit their excess to facilities to develop their talents. We would like to have clarity from the relevant parties on how and when athletics in Namibia will be accommodated in this unfairly based matter.
