Vaalgras community meeting failed
DISGRUNTLED NATIVE WRITES:The much- anticipated and highly expected community meeting eventually took place on Saturday, 1st October 2022 at Vredefontein after 14 months. It was an absolute failure, because it ended in chaos without taking any proper Resolution.
There was actually only consensus reached to review the Customary Law without any timeframe, who to do it and when to do it etc. They are clauses such as detention of drunk people misbehaving at functions etc, which is unconditional. The community members who attended the meeting had too many subterranean mysterious agendas and choices of candidates.
It was just an absolute waste of time, energy and resources. One could observe and heard from some surviving elders how unhappy they were. I think one biggest challenge is applying correct meetings procedures and the proper lack thereof. There were so many aggressions, hatred, vengeance amongst the members of the community. Some are properly being promised positions, should their candidates win the succession.
I personally went there to go hear, whether there’s a royal blood in Vaalgras and what to do in the absence of that, although that is clearly stipulated in the Traditional Authorities Act No. 25 of 2000. Secondly, I would have like to hear how exactly does the Traditional Authority want to go about the entire process of the succession race. The other biggest visible challenge was the disunity among Stephanus’se to come up with the name of one sole candidate.
It appeared to me that the Traditional Authority wanted to throw the ball back into the hands of the community. The Nama communities residing didn’t attend the meeting, because they argue what will they get from that leadership. So, The Way Forward was never touched on, before the meeting was disrupted.
I don’t see what could be done resolve this leadership and succession impasses. The other option that I was sitting with in that meeting was table a Vote of No Confidence motion to dissolve the whole Council. They are wasting time with the exercise, because they don’t need to expedite the process, because they are busy benefitting in diverse ways. I think it’s time for the broad community to take draconian strategic remedial corrective actions.
