Urgent call to save HIV/Aids programme

Mandy Rittmann
B.B. BOBEJé, ACTIVIST WRITES:

We, concerned citizens of Namibia, urgently appeal to the Government of the Republic of Namibia to intervene in the recent termination of employment contracts for essential health personnel in our ARV clinics.

This crisis follows the decision by the United States government to reduce funding for African HIV/Aids programmes. The impact on Namibia’s health system is already being felt, threatening the continuity of treatment for thousands of patients who depend on life-saving antiretroviral medication.

We further note with concern that public statements previously made by former Minister of Health, Dr. Kalumbi Shangula, may have created false hope for patients and health workers, leaving the future of our national HIV/Aids programme in uncertainty.

We therefore call upon Her Excellency, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, and the Honourable Minister of Health and Social Services, Madam Esperance Luvindao, to urgently safeguard both the health of our people and the jobs of dedicated health workers.

Time is running out – together, let us save lives.
