Public Holidays Paralyses

Mandy Rittmann
SAPIENS WRITES:

In May 2025 we have six public holidays. This is one week out of the month.

Labour Day (50% of Namibians are unemployed or underemployed below poverty line), Cassinga Day, Africa Day, Genocide Remembrance Day and Ascension Day.

On weekdays, civil servants leave work before midday, before the public holiday!

If the public holiday falls on a Sunday, Monday is given off.

This public holiday bonanza is damaging to the economy and is expensive. According to the Labour Act, workers have to be paid double on these days, if they work!

The Tourist Industry is 24/7 considering scrapping the Monday off days and combining Cassinga and Genocide Day as a Human Rights Violations (War Crimes) Day.

Namibia needs Socio-Economic upliftment after 35 years of Independence not more holidays for the unemployed.
