Pollution in Walvis Bay

Mandy Rittmann
VERY CONCERNED WALVIS BAY RESIDENT WRITES:

I’m writing this letter in the hope that something urgent will be done soon to eradicate this dire problem once and for all.

The residents of Walvis Bay have been on the receiving end of terrible black smoke from the dumping site as dumped tyres are burnt daily for a very long time now.

You wake up to the smell of burning rubber. It’s in the air, in your home, in your bedroom, in your nostrils, in your face.

This town is fast becoming the filthiest, most unhygienic place in Namibia, if not Africa. Apart from the horrible air pollution, there are forever pools of sewage water in some streets, piles of rubbish everywhere, and the potholes that we now so skillfully dodge in traffic.

As a resident of Walvis Bay, I do believe that this letter represents the sentiment of many residents.

I urgently implore the responsible stakeholders to act fast. It has become impossible to live in Walvis Bay.

Thank you.
