SCARED RESIDENT WRITES:I am perplexed by what is happening here in ||Kharas region in terms of police operations and brutally. The Police Act prescribes minimum force, but the moment the police reserve force is involved it’s no longer minimum force. They are apparently just trained to “kick and beat up”, that’s the only language they understand. The inhabitants may practice a cultural disarray and social decay, but still, they aren’t the Namibian Constitution in terms of Article 6.I believe there are cases that don’t need their involvement and even if such cases arise their actions are absurd, obnoxious and obscene towards defenceless civilians. I would rather ascribe their actions as monstrous, nefarious and callous. Let me cite an unconstitutional incident which occur over weekend of 14 and 15 January 2023 at Keetmanshoop in Krönlein suburb, which befall a certain alleged drug dealer.It’s high time that the head of state, Dr. Hage Geingob, the minister of home affairs, Hon. Frans Kapofi, the inspector general of the Namibian police, luitenant-general, Josef Shilongo and the ||Kharas regional police commander, Commissioner Katamila, should know what happened to that certain alleged drug dealer, Mr. Plaaitjies, who was beaten to death by the police reserve force. We are not necessarily saying that we support crime and we don’t pray that it should go with impunity, but we malign and bemoan the level of “brutality”, which is contrary to Article 6 of the Namibian Constitution.To the best of our understanding, police are there to protect and defend citizens and civilians, but it appears as if we are not safe in the hands of the police. We have become victims of brutality within our own territories. Drugs don’t cost someone’s life and won’t never bring back someone’s precious life. Somebody must explain what really happen. Those type of coercive and draconian actions must be challenged in a court of law, so that we establish the constitutionality of such brutal acts.
