Namibians deserve good governance

Mandy Rittmann
With political liberation, voters were promised socio-economic prosperity and excellent service delivery.

The means for achieving this were ministries, state-owned enterprises (SOEs), and the private sector, aimed at driving economic growth.

SOEs were granted greater management freedom. They belong to the state (taxpayers) and should deliver satisfactory services based on efficiency, need, merit, affordability, accountability, and transparency. They are expected to generate profits (paying dividends to the state) or, at the very least, break even. But how many actually pay dividends? Most require annual bailouts to cover their debts.

Namcor is the latest example of mismanagement and corruption. Air Namibia went bankrupt, while other airlines flying to Windhoek are thriving. The Fishrot debacle is in the final stages of justice.

Mismanagement and corruption rob essential services from the forgotten poor voters. Fifty percent of Namibians suffer from poverty.

Our new President has promised zero tolerance in the fight against corruption. She needs our support at every level for the common good. We need brave warriors with merit, pragmatism, and honesty to deliver Vision 2030: A better shared future for all.

An SOE is not a vehicle for expropriation (theft) or entitled political appointments. It is there for service delivery to the people, customers, and voters.

We share this place. We all belong. Let us unite for the common good of Team Namibia, in the spirit of Ubuntu/Harambee.

The word (promise) must become flesh (action). Namibians deserve good governance.
