It reflects what we value as educators, parents and communities – not only about academic achievement, but also about rest, well-being, family life and the opportunities we create for children to flourish.As parents, we all want the same thing for our children: to receive an excellent education while also growing into healthy, resilient and well-rounded young people. A school calendar is about much more than dates on a page. It shapes family routines, opportunities for rest, participation in sport and cultural activities, and ultimately the rhythm of learning throughout the year. For that reason, perhaps the way we structure the school year deserves as much thoughtful consideration as the curriculum itself.Out of curiosity, I recently explored how different education systems structure their academic calendars. My intention was not to determine which system is “better”, but rather to understand how schools balance teaching time, learner wellbeing and opportunities for rest.One observation stood out to me.Many schools appear to place just as much emphasis on how school days and holiday periods are distributed throughout the year as they do on the total number of teaching days.Looking at our own school calendar, I noticed that the first half of the year contains considerably more opportunities for learners to rest than the second half. In contrast, the latter part of the year often becomes a long, uninterrupted stretch of schooling.This made me wonder whether there might be value in creating a more balanced rhythm by introducing a winter break, even if this simply meant redistributing some holiday time from another part of the year.To me, this idea is about far more than having “another holiday”. It is about recognising that the timing of rest can be just as important as the amount of rest.Supporting learner wellbeingChildren return to school after the long summer holiday feeling refreshed and ready for a new year. As the months progress, however, the academic demands increase, and learners often enter a long period with few opportunities to pause and recover.Schools frequently encourage parents to prioritise adequate rest and recovery for their children, recognising the important role that sleep and recovery play in maintaining healthy immune systems, emotional wellbeing and academic performance. This reflects something many parents instinctively know: well-rested children generally learn better.A thoughtfully placed winter break could complement this philosophy by giving learners – and teachers – the opportunity to pause, recover and return to school with renewed energy, motivation and focus for the remainder of the academic year.Reducing disruption to learningSchools rightly encourage learners to pursue excellence not only academically but also through sport, culture, leadership and other extracurricular activities.Many regional and national events are traditionally scheduled during the middle of the year to align with the holiday periods of other educational institutions. Representing your country is a great honour. Unfortunately, many school sporting events take place during the winter period. This is also when most of our schools and national teams travel, as our neighbouring country, South Africa is on its winter school holiday. As a result, Namibian learners representing their schools, regions or country often miss valuable classroom time and assessments. We do not want to deny Namibian children the opportunity to represent their country simply because they have to miss school. Nor do we want them to be unable to give their full commitment because they are worried about assignments that need to be submitted while school continues as normal.A winter break could help reduce this disruption. Even when an event does not fall exactly within that period, the break could provide valuable time for participating learners to catch up on missed work, complete assessments where appropriate, and return to the classroom feeling prepared and confident rather than immediately facing the pressure of catching up while keeping pace with new learning.Strengthening family lifeFamilies today are often spread across different cities, regions and even countries. In addition, children and young adults frequently attend different educational institutions, each with its own academic calendar. When holiday periods do not align, opportunities to spend meaningful time together can become limited.Greater alignment between school holidays and the holiday periods of other educational institutions could create valuable opportunities for families to reconnect without learners needing to miss school. For many households, even a single overlapping break could make family visits more practical and strengthen relationships that are otherwise difficult to maintain during the academic year.A balanced calendarThis reflection is not about increasing holiday time or reducing academic standards.Rather, it is about considering whether the same number of teaching days could be distributed in a way that better supports sustained learning, learner wellbeing and family life.School calendars are incredibly complex to design. Curriculum requirements, examinations, public holidays, staffing, extracurricular commitments and many other factors all need to be considered. There is rarely a perfect solution.Perhaps the conversation is not about how many school days or holiday days there should be, but rather about when those periods of work and rest occur.A thoughtfully balanced calendar has the potential to support healthier learners, stronger families and more sustained academic engagement. Ultimately, that creates the conditions in which children are best able to learn, grow and thrive.Whether or not a winter break is ultimately the right answer, I hope this reflection encourages a broader conversation about how we can continue to shape school calendars that support not only academic excellence, but also the wellbeing, resilience and holistic development of every learner.A school calendar is more than a timetable. It is one of the quiet ways in which we shape childhood – creating a rhythm of learning, rest, challenge and connection that helps young people flourish both inside and beyond the classroom.As a parent, I believe that is a conversation worth having.
