ANONYMOUS WRITES:Namibia is one of the most unequal societies on earth, 30 years after independence!The upmarket Shopping Centre at Maerua, exposes the gap between haves and have-nots. The traffic lights are magnets for stray, street child beggars in daylight (school-time). This is next door to the SPCA, the home for stray pets!Along Robert Mugabe Avenue (the highway serving the people from the National Assembly/Council to the new State House), dark cars with tinted windows, drive past on a regular basis. They see nothing, hear nothing, say nothing and do nothing. The name of these children is “tomorrow”, what tomorrow?The big road starts opposite poor Katutura Hospital (run down) and the party HQ, with the golden exodus cult idol and ends at Windhoek Gymnasium (ethos) – morals, ethics and integrity (logos) – reason and logical analytical deduction (pathos) – drive enthusiasm. It is open to everybody who can afford it, but few can!At independence, the founding father identified ignorance, poverty and disease as the challenges facing an independent Namibia. How far have we come to meet these challenges?Today we have a 50 percent conundrum – youth employment, shacks without ventilation, water, light and toilets, cul de sac shebeens around every corner, poor education outcomes, gender-based violence, assaults, theft and accidents.Politicians promised progress at the end of the struggle in 1990. You cannot eat promises (votes) but politicians can access resources. Politics (votes) is about power. Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely (see Fishrot).We need honourable politicians and senior civil servants based on the principles of merit (qualifications, competence, performance) pragmatism (compromise, cooperation, discretions and honesty (integrity) for the common good.We need a level playing field of opportunity, where initiative and effort is rewarded. Entitlement is a handicap (we are not the royal family).Break the cycle of lip service (promises) self-service (narrow based cadre connected) and substandard (wait and see) public service. Live up to Vision 2023, Namibia, a prosperous, industrialized country developed by its own people in peace and harmony, security and democracy.We share this place, we all belong. If we don’t care, we won’t have peace. We need a transparent, accountable, vibrant capitalist economy with initiative effort reward and a social conscience.
