Invest in a bicycle and save

DR. A.C OBHOLZER WRITES:

Movement of mind and body is life. Keep moving both, and live, and save.

After the blows by the Covid-19 pandemic and economic lockdowns of the last two years, we are now facing the knock-on effects of the Russian war on Ukraine. Fuel and gas prices are soaring, bread and sunflower oil will become more expensive, "slap” chips" and fertilizer prices are up.

For the poor, transport to work is a major portion of their budget. A forty percent taxi hike is anticipated. This is major socio-economic distress. Transport inflation will affect food prices.

Re-plan your budget, don’t smoke, drink occasionally, walk and invest in a bicycle. The Windhoek Municipality is already investing in user friendly cycle lanes.

Although Windhoek is a city built on hills, if you follow the roads along river courses, you can cycle without too much effort.

Cycle shops (basic) are aware of the need. A basic bicycle, with gears costs about N$2 300.00, add a crash helmet, a reflective jacket and a lock and you are set up long term with savings.

I am sure that many employers will assist this switch. You may have to get up half an hour earlier, but your health will also benefit, with no gym subscription costs. You will lose weight and save on medical expenses.

When in town, avoid lifts, like in the Oupa Frans Indongo Building – use stairs if you go up one floor or down two floors.

Use the present crisis as a challenge. Adapt, survive and be resilient.

Commuters from Rehoboth and Okahandja will expand lift clubs.

Namibia is the land of the brave. We will survive. Yes, we can!
