Chief's Government recognition

Mandy Rittmann
B.A. BASSON FROM VAALGRAS WRITES:

It's the first time that I have to concur wholeheartedly with a politician. Thus, I concede with the new Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Hon. James Sankwasa, who recently echoed sentiments that the chieftainship race and the subsequent coronation of a given chief or a Headman is solely the legitimate responsibility of a given traditional community.

It's also their responsibility to coronate such a Chief or Headman in accordance with their respective customary laws, beliefs, norms and practices etc. The Government comes in to only recognize or not, but it's not their role to interfere into traditional affairs. They shouldn't be biased for political gain to further the already existing stir of traditional division or to advance their vengeance for whatever reasons. The Traditional Authorities Act No. 25 of 2000 is very explicit on the designation and removal of a Chief or a Headman and not the Courts.
