Challenges faced by SMEs with banks

SME AMBASSADOR WRITES:Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) face significant challenges when dealing with banks. One of the main issues is the lack of regular engagement from banks with their SME clients. Many banks do not visit businesses to understand their operational challenges or provide guidance and support.In many cases, SMEs are left without proper communication or assistance, even when they are facing serious financial difficulties.Another major concern is related to government-backed recovery loans. Although these loans were introduced to support SMEs during and after Covid-19, many businesses remain under pressure. Several SMEs have requested extensions on repayment terms to reduce monthly installments, but are informed that such decisions must be approved by the Bank of Namibia, which delays possible solutions.In addition, many SMEs were already behind on tax payments due to the impact of Covid-19. When recovery loan funds were disbursed, a large portion was deducted towards outstanding tax obligations. This resulted in many businesses not receiving the intended operational capital, leaving them in the same difficult position as before.Another serious challenge is the listing of SMEs on credit bureaus such as ITC. Once listed, businesses – especially those in manufacturing, joinery, and construction – struggle to obtain materials on credit.This forces them to use limited cash flow to purchase materials upfront, which quickly drains working capital. As a result, businesses are unable to complete projects, leading to reduced income and further financial strain.While some banks, such as FNB, do make an effort to engage with SME clients and provide support, this is not consistent across the banking sector.
