AGM of Council of Traditional Leaders
BENEDIKTUS BASSON WRITES FROM VAALGRAS:
I’m perplexed by the current and prevailing squandering of taxpayer’s money.
I am however delighted that the assembly was at last hosted this year, despite wasting and embezzling of public funds with the excuse of the Covid-19 pandemic.
What is deplorable and mind-boggling is that public resources are harnessed to fit the avarice, corrupt interest of a few well-connected few. Over a million, if not billions are being spent to host such a luxurious occasion at taxpayer’s expense. Take into account the irreversible amounts of money spent on travelling, per diems and accommodation.
In my personal view, the Ministry should review and amend the Customary Laws and practices in regard to the replacement of Traditional Chiefs as provided for in the regulatory governing laws of the country.
In my opinion, the Minister of Justice, Honourable Ivonne Dausab should be obliged to submit an amendment to Parliament and convince Parliament to revisit this legislative framework for the betterment of the electorate. It should go hand in hand with the reviewing of the Traditional Authorities Act No. 25 of 2000, which has become redundant and irrelevant in terms of its application with the swiftly changing trends of standards of living, caused by the global economic stimulus and meltdown.
Therefore, I herewith implore the authorities entrusted with this noble responsibility to make the existence of the Traditional Authorities in compliance with the role, duties and functions they need to play in traditional societies.
