BREAKING NEWS: Penehupifo Pohamba has died

Former First Lady Penehupifo Pohamba, wife of Namibia’s second president, Hifikepunye Pohamba, has died aged 78, state media has confirmed. Details of her death have not yet been announced.

She served as First Lady from 2005 to 2015, focusing on maternal and child health, women’s empowerment and support for vulnerable communities.

A trained nurse and midwife, Pohamba studied in Tanzania and Jamaica before qualifying to practise. Her medical background informed her advocacy for improved healthcare access and her involvement in Namibia’s response to HIV and Aids.
