Vegetation Recovers After Year of Improved Rainfall
Namibia has experienced a dramatic improvement in vegetation conditions between December 2024 and December 2025, according to satellite data from the USGS FEWS NET monitoring system.
The Vegetation Condition Index maps reveal a striking transformation across the country. In late December 2024, most of Namibia displayed severe to very poor vegetation conditions, with deep brown tones dominating the landscape from the western coastal regions through the central and southern areas.
By early December 2025, the situation had changed considerably. Large swaths of the northern and eastern regions now show good to excellent vegetation coverage, indicated by teal and darker blue-green colors.
The central regions have improved from severe conditions to poor or normal status, while even the traditionally arid western zones display better vegetation health.
The improved conditions are crucial for the country's agricultural sector and livestock farmers, who faced severe drought stress in 2024.
