Obstetrics and Gynaecology (abbreviated as Obs and Gynae, O&G, OB-GYN and OB/GYN) is the medical speciality that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics (covering pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period) and gynaecology (covering the health of the female reproductive system – vagina, uterus, ovaries, and breasts). “So, our job entails providing healthcare to women across all the age groups,” says Dr David Nomvula.
To become an OB-GYN, one needs to be a hard worker and passionate about obstetrics and gynaecology; it’s one of the busiest medical disciplines, working long and unpredictable hours. Babies come at any time of the day. One needs to be patient as it requires an additional four years training after completing an undergraduate medical degree.
“The most special part I love about my job is delivering a healthy baby to the expecting family. Taking the family through the journey of pregnancy from the first heartbeat to cutting the umbilical cord is special,” added Dr David Nomvula.
