The Generals Club in Swakopmund was filled with excitement the past weekend as players gathered for the weekly Knobel event, a beloved German game known locally known as Knöbel. Organised by Estelle De Vos, the event attracted 72 participants divided into nine teams, fostering camaraderie and healthy competition among both seasoned players and newcomers.“This game is a pleasure to play together,” De Vos remarked, with excitement. “It’s a wonderful way for people to get to know each other while enjoying the thrill of competition.” The weekly gatherings not only serve as a platform for playing Knobel but also create a social atmosphere where friendships can blossom.Knobel is a game immersed in tradition and strategy, making it especially popular within the German community and beyond. De Vos explained the game’s mechanics, emphasizing its unique scoring system. “You always play with 21 cards in the middle, and the goal is to have the least points,” she elaborated. “Your ones and sixes are crucial, and achieving three ones, known as a ‘general,’ is the ultimate goal.” This strategic layer adds depth, ensuring that players must think carefully about their moves.Each Wednesday, the event features three main prizes for the best players and a quirky “booby” prize for the participant with the least points, reinforcing the idea that while there is a winner, the spirit of the game is about participation and enjoyment. “It’s not just about winning; it’s about the experience and the fun of playing,” De Vos added.As the competition kicked off in Swakopmund, players arrived in high spirits, eager to take part in the day’s festivities. With 72 players in total, the event showcased a diverse range of skill levels and backgrounds, uniting everyone through a shared love of Knobel.The competition kicked off with a series of matches, where teams battled it out in four rounds of 11 crosses. After hours of intense gameplay, the winners emerged amid cheers and applause. Ankers took first place with an impressive total of 316 points, closely followed by Skeleton Coast at 314 points, and Pirates Cave with 311 points. These teams demonstrated not only skill but also effective teamwork, which is essential in Knobel.In addition to team accolades, individual prizes were awarded, with Johan from Veterans claiming the top individual prize. Adri and Jaden from Generals secured second and third places, respectively, showcasing their prowess in the game.De Vos expressed her excitement over the strong participation and competitive spirit displayed throughout the day.She also highlighted the event’s charitable aspect, noting that half of the proceeds from ticket sales would benefit the Round Table, an organization dedicated to community service, as well as support to local initiatives. “We’re thrilled to contribute back to the community,” she said. “It’s important to give back, and events like this help us do just that.”
