Cultivating change in Omaheke

Horticulturist
In the vast plains of Namibia’s Omaheke region, an area known mainly for livestock farming, horticulturist Kakunaa Katuuo is sowing the seeds of change. As the founder and horticulturist behind Orevia Green Farm, Katuuo is pioneering sustainable agriculture in one of the country’s most drought-prone areas. Her two-hectare farm, Orevia, is a vibrant green oasis where rows of fresh vegetables thrive against the odds.

Since launching operations in 2020, Katuuo has demonstrated that determination, innovation and strategic resource management can overcome environmental limitations.

Under her guidance, Orevia Green Farm has become a vital supplier of fresh produce to regional institutions and major outlets such as Gobabis MegaSave, SPAR, Atlantic Catering Company and local schools. The farm plays a critical role in reducing food miles and strengthening food security within the region.

A key turning point in the farm’s development came with the successful drilling of a borehole—an initiative that addressed one of the region’s most pressing issues: water scarcity. This vital resource enabled Katuuo to install an efficient irrigation system, lowering water costs and improving crop yield consistency, even amid drought conditions.

Beyond her role on the farm, Katuuo is a passionate advocate for youth empowerment and agricultural innovation. As the Chief Executive Officer of the Aminuis Farmers’ Association Youth Wing, she mentors aspiring young farmers, championing the role of horticulture in diversifying the region's economy and building resilient rural communities.

Katuuo’s work is more than farming—it’s a movement. Through Orevia Green Farm, she is not only cultivating vegetables but also cultivating hope, inspiring young Namibians and redefining what’s possible in the arid landscapes of Omaheke.

Her vision is clear: to make horticulture a cornerstone of rural development, empowering communities to feed themselves sustainably and prosper despite climatic challenges.
