Namport equips Usakos Youth Centre
Donated ICT equipment
The Namport Social Investment Fund (NSIF) donated information communication technology (ICT) equipment valued at N$50,000 to the Usakos Multi-Purpose Youth Centre.
The equipment includes a laptop, projector and six desktops to be used to enhance the capacity of the centre to continue empowering the Usakos youth with much needed basic computer skills.
Akser Mwafangeyo, the acting director of the Multi-Purpose Youth Resource Centre, under the ministry of sport, youth and national service directorate youth development in Usakos, said that the newly acquired devices will be used to conduct training courses at the centre as part of the ministry’s programme to upskill the unemployed youth in the country.
“This gesture comes at a time where the non-attending school youth in Usakos are finding themselves with nothing to occupy their time with and as a result turn to participating in social ill activities such as alcohol and drug abuse among others’.
According to Mwafangeyo the town is known for its high unemployment rate and in an attempt to curbing this, the ministry in 1999 established the multipurpose centre to provide short computer training courses for the youth.
Handing the donation over on behalf of Namport, Tana Pesat, chairperson of the NSIF working committee thanked the recipients for the life changing work they are doing in the community. She also emphasized that Namport through its Social Investment Fund is dedicated to being relevant and present in not only the society it operates in, which is the Erongo and Karas regions but in all 14 regions across Namibia.
The youth centre boasts with a youth hostel which also accommodates learners from surrounding villages and farms. The centre was forced to pause its activities due to the existing computers having already outlived their lifespan. With this donation from Namport the centre can once again open its doors to the community and offer the much required serves.
Ever since its inception, the centre enjoyed an average intake of approximately 30 students during a three months program. Some of the graduates from this program have as a result successfully gained formal employment and some are successfully managing their own ICT related business, such as printing shops etc.
