Motocross mania at Swakop

Adrenaline-filled fun
The third round of the National Namibian Motocross Championship is taking place on Saturday at the Swakopmund MX track.
Round three of the National Namibian Motocross Championship will be held at the Swakopmund MX track on 18 June.

Besides some very competitive classes to showcase, it will also be the first time a women’s division is introduced. The organiser of the event, Andrea Brand, said the day promises a lot of excitement, not just for the riders ranging from kiddies to veterans, but also for the spectators. “The track is well set up with all the turns, jumps, and obstacles to match international standards,” she said, adding that a separate track was built for the kiddies’ 50cc class.

The 50cc class, where Carla Brand (9) will (for now) be the only girl competing against fast and talented boys, which include brothers De Wet (7) and Delmar du Plessis (5), and Duhan Steenkamp (8) – all of them from Swakopmund - will take to the track first.

The 65cc class is dominated by Khian Kotze (10), followed by De Wet du Plessis (who is competing in two classes), Jan-Willem Bronkhorst (8), and Divan du Plessis (10).

According to Brand, the 85cc class has become the most improved and competitive class. Luca Brand is closely followed by Wynand Cronje, Lehan Augustyn, and Juan de Vos. “We expect good positions from them if they race in the King of the Dirt-class against all the bigger, faster bikes. This improvement is because of hours of dedicated training, and the results are visible, and the spectators can expect exciting motocross,” she said.

As for the new women’s division to be introduced, Brand believes it will also attract a lot of attention, and that there will be a tight competition between the two first positions – predicted to be between Geena Sadlowski from Swakopmund and Zoe Waldschmidt From Windhoek.

An adrenaline-pumped competition is expected in the 125cc junior and senior division, where the fastest riders participating include Namibian champion Liam Gilchrist, Alexander Howard, and twins Anton and Gerhard Myburgh. In the open class, 250cc bikes are riding against 450cc. Leading the class is Gilchrist, followed by Quinton van Rooyen and Don-Ray Botha. The Clubman class is mixed - with beginners and average riders, which is also very fun to watch.

“We must not forget the veterans – a big group who still got it,” said Brand. Here Rudi Brand (still riding after many injuries) will race against this division champion, Frank Klosta, and Quinton van Rooyen.

The King of the Dirt will be the last, but not the least, race of the day – and is considered one of the biggest and most exciting. This race is open to all the bikes, from small to big, where children ride against their fathers. There will be shade netting, food and drinks, as well as music and entertainment.
