Vocalist Amortia Azaria Visagie (18) loves music. "My family loves music and it just grew on me. My personal experiences - things that I didn’t know how to say or couldn’t say - moved me to write.”

She decided to pursue a career in the entertainment industry when the first video of "Beter Dae" - meaning "better days" - which she posted online, received a lot of views. "People responded positively. They said I help them through my music and there’s nothing better than actually making a difference in someone’s life.”

Azaria does not want to limit herself to one genre right now. “I still haven’t tried out other genres yet. I tried Amapiano and R&B, but I think I can hop onto other genres too.”

She says her creative process blooms when she’s in the studio while her producers are composing the beat. “I usually start thinking of a name for the song and then what it’ll sound like - the lyrics and rhythm. I start writing and record what I have in mind and let the other ideas come as we go on.”

Other times she just starts writing on random beats and plays with the melodies. She wants to share a message with her fans. "I want them to know I appreciate the support they have given and continue to give. You keep me grounded and make me remember why I’m doing all of this. Thank you for your positive messages and the love you always show me. I love you all.”

Visagie dreams of becoming a professional artist. To that end, fans can expect a new album coming their way this year and just maybe a few stage appearances as well.

Azaria was born in Windhoek and raised in Okahandja. She attended K.W von Marëes Combined School in Okahandja and later moved to Walvis Bay, where she attended De Duine Secondary School until she matriculated last year.

She was raised by her grandmother. The singer, who comes from a musical family, explains she's loved music for as long as she can remember. “My mom sings as well and was the one that inspired me to start singing. I started singing in our church and at my school.”

According to the songstress, she has acquired many skills on her musical journey. “I have learned how to control my voice better in the different genres and how to communicate with other artists." She’s now learning how to record herself.

Growing up, Azaria loved watching videos on YouTube, where she came across Clariyah, a female rapper and singer. “I learned all her songs word by word and she inspired me to actually start writing.”

Her favourite song at the moment is “Make me cry” by Pip Millet. "You might think it’s about someone, but, from another perspective, it could be about depression. I love the rhythm of the song, and Pip is so calm and composed, but there’s a lot of power and strength in her voice."
