FNB backs Namibia Street Classic

The build-up to the Namibia Street Classic gained significant momentum this week, with First National Bank Namibia committing N$2 million towards the hosting of the international athletics event.The announcement was made during a media launch hosted by event organiser Henk Botha in Windhoek, as preparations continue for the highly anticipated competition scheduled for 27 and 28 March.FNB Namibia Retail Chief Executive Mbo Luvindao said the financial institution is proud to partner with the initiative, highlighting its potential to elevate local athletics and inspire the next generation.“We are very happy and proud to partner with Coach Henk for the Namibia Street Classic event that will be taking place here in Namibia, where our local athletes will have an opportunity to benchmark themselves against international competition,” Luvindao said.“Namibia has moved beyond just exporting talent to the rest of the world. We’re now bringing that level of competition here. Sport has the power to encourage discipline, leadership and character among young people, and this event will inspire national pride.”The N$2 million sponsorship, backed by the FirstRand Group, is expected to play a key role in ensuring the successful delivery of the event, which forms part of the World Athletics Continental Tour.Botha outlined an exciting programme that will combine youth development with elite competition at Windhoek High School Vegkop Stadium.“In the morning we will start with children aged seven to 18 competing in all the different events,” Botha said. “From 14h00, the main programme begins with high jump, long jump, pole vault, shot put, 60 metres and 60-metre hurdles.”The event is set to feature a strong international field, including American pole vault star Sam Kendricks, who could challenge the six-metre mark, and New Zealand shot put heavyweight Tom Walsh, a multiple global medallist.South African athletes are also expected to make a strong showing, adding further depth to the competition across several disciplines.Botha expressed confidence that the Namibia Street Classic will deliver a unique and memorable athletics experience for fans.“We’re aiming to see extraordinary athletics throughout the day,” he said.With financial backing secured and top international athletes expected to compete, the Namibia Street Classic is shaping up to be one of the most significant sporting events on the country’s calendar.
