Sanitation levels improved at Grünau

The construction of a sewage oxidation pond has marked a significant milestone in the development and improvement of sanitation infrastructure for Grünau settlement.

The sewerage oxidation pond was successfully built for N$1.7 million, alongside a gravity sewer line costing N$1.2 million. According to David Tiboth, control admin officer of the Grünau Settlement Office, the new sewerage network provides an essential channel for wastewater flow. It has also improved overall sanitation levels in the settlement and is expected to generate considerable cost savings. “The Ministry of Urban and Rural Development (MURD) allocated the necessary funds for the construction of the sewerage system, which includes 54 manholes connected to the oxidation pond. Of the 300 households in Grünau, 60 to 70% are already connected to the sewerage line. Our next priority is to build toilets for those who do not yet have them, connect them to the system, and further improve sanitation,” he said.

Beneficial new system - Previously, Grünau relied on a manhole system from which sewage had to be manually withdrawn or pumped, transported, and then dumped at Karasburg. “We did not have a sewage pond, which created logistical problems with trucks, caused discomfort, and incurred additional costs. The new system has brought significant relief,” Tiboth explained.

Tiboth highlighted that the only sector currently generating buying power and employment in Grünau is the small tourism sector, which includes lodges and commercial farms. “Development here is very slow. This was a fairly large project, and many locals were employed. It required extensive excavation and considerable construction work. Opportunities like this are extremely beneficial for our community,” he said.

Plans are already in place for expansion. “We have made provision to add another one or two ponds—a large and a small one. Part of our plan involves establishing a semi-purified plant, which would allow us to use the treated wastewater for a plantation to grow, for example, vegetables for local consumption. We look forward to the next phase of the project.”

Critical development projects - Tiboth also highlighted several critical development projects that could create much-needed short-term employment opportunities and called on development and funding partners to join the effort to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the residents of Grünau. “We need additional boreholes (N$400 000) and community toilets (N$300 000) in the residential area. We would also like to implement community brick-making (N$100 000) and bakery (N$50 000) projects.”

Additionally, the community hall requires renovation (N$250 000), the construction of a community market would cost N$1.5 million, and a children’s playground is estimated at N$80 000. Street and floodlights need to be installed (N$40 000), the dumpsite must be rehabilitated and fenced off (N$700 000), and the soccer pitch also requires rehabilitation (N$80 000).
