Williams dominates inaugural Women’s Champs

Cue sports
Kelly-Ann Williams was crowned champion of the inaugural Women’s Championships held at Boiler Room last weekend.

The Namibia Cue Sports Federation (NCSF) closed event saw a turnout of 16 young and experienced ladies battling it out for the floating trophy and crucial ranking points.

Williams finished top of the log with 12 points, ahead of the tie between Martha Kotze and Anel Brink in second place on 11 points.

Reflecting on her experience at the tournament, Williams described it as “a great event”, especially with the biggest women’s turnout yet.

“I enjoyed it. I have never seen so many women turn up for a tournament before. The mini tournaments we held last year only saw entries of up to 10 ladies,” she said.

She added that the turnout was supposed to be 20, but some women could not make it.

“It was good to see new players like Alta Folscher, Jeanine Kloppers and Annelie Dreyer, who got their first taste of serious competition. It’s good to have them on board in the women-only cue sports community,” she said.

Williams, who has in the past dominated the mini tournaments held by the federation, could not hide her delight in clinching the top spot.

“I must admit, it feels great to be number one again. I will fight to stay number one, even though I had a lot of competition today.

“The likes of Charmaine Kotze, Charmone Kotze, India van Wyk, Celeste Espach and Anel Brink, whom I had to beat in a tiebreak match to clinch the overall title, really showed up with their A-game,” she said.

Williams recently represented the country at the inaugural Commonwealth Billiards Championship in Mauritius last month.

The rest of the final standings witnessed tense action, with fourth place a nine-point tie between Kloppers, Charmone Kotze, Espach and Charmaine Kotze.

Tied in eighth place on eight points were Cindy Engelbrecht and Gaynor van der Westhuizen.

Remainder of the standings: 10 Elrizza Koopman (seven points), 11 Vanya Swanepoel (six), 12 India van Wyk (five), 12 Annelie Dreyer (five), 14 Alta Folscher (four), 14 Ivana Mulder (four), 16 Nicolette Brayshaw (three).
