The conversation about the relevance and survival of traditional media in the social media age is a never-ending one. My Zone took the discussion to the streets of Otjiwarongo to hear what the youth’s opinion is. Here are their views:
Ines Kotingo
Traditional media is definitely still important. Not everything we see and read on social media is true. There are people out there who tend to come up with irrelevant information and feed it to people. This information is often fake and far from the reality.
David Shagama
It is important because if not for traditional media, the nation will not be up to date with the latest news and information and be accurately informed. Traditional media is also a platform where youth get to develop and learn new skills and talents.
Thomas Moses
If we throw out traditional media, this will raise unemployment in the country as qualified reporters will lose their jobs. Social media is also not a safe way of retaining information because anybody can say anything, unlike on radio - for instance - which is more regulated.
Edwin Samule
Traditional media is and will still remain critical to the masses, especially for rural areas and developing countries. Technology has continued to ease the burden with access to information. However, the traditional means still create a powerful mode of accurate and independent coverage with accountability.
Hildreth Haufiku
The older generation especially still have a culture of reading their paper as a daily morning ritual. This proves that traditional media is not going anywhere. Personally, I listen to news at the top of the hour on radio to keep myself informed. I do not go to social media for news. Social media is for socialising.
Terry Ujamba
Traditional media is still very relevant. Looking at the demographic of the age groups, people aged 45 to 50 are in the majority and for them, traditional media is vital. The social media space is more influential due to the hype of the youth, but traditional media is relevant.
