Southern Business School Namibia awards scholarship
The Southern Business School Namibia recently held an online Facebook competition. The prize was a scholarship for a one-year Higher Certificate in Management. Alise Gotlieb was the lucky winner and her 250 word statement impressed the judges enough to be awarded the scholarship.
Alise is very excited at the prospect of improving her academic knowledge. The scholarship has a monetary value of N$9 000 and infinitely more in potential promotion and career enhancement value.
Distance Education at tertiary level is a way in which people can access high-quality and NQA-certified courses from the comfort of their own homes at their own convenience. With social media and online connectivity permeating every part of our life, SBS Namibia felt it was a great way to engage with its "potential" students.
Alise took part in the Facebook competition. Competitors had to write a statement of no more than 250 words about why they deserved the scholarship. Alise’s statement struck a chord with the judges - eventually making her victorious over the other participants.
Her statement read: “I recently had to make the difficult choice of leaving my baby behind in Walvis Bay to come look for better work and study opportunities. I have come to the realisation that I need to go back to school to further my career . . . ”
Mr Albin Jacobs, director of SBS Namibia, was pleased with the number of Facebook participants, demonstrating that it truly is the right medium to engage with students on.
“It is great to see there’s such a hunger for tertiary education. Being able to make a one-year course available as distance learning will hopefully make students realise that a tertiary education is not out of their reach here in Namibia.”
